To qualify for surgery a person must be approximately 100 pounds or more overweight, having a BMI greater than 35.
If your body mass index is between 35 and 40, you must have at least one or more additional health problems associated with obesity:
- Diabetes
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Hypertension
- Severe Acid Reflux (GERD)
- Degenerative Joint Disease (Severe Joint Pain)
- Shortness of Breath
- Depression
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a change in the minimum weight requirement. In some cases you may qualify for bariatric surgery even with a BMI mass index below 35.
